Area Resident Wins New Roof from Garcia Roofing

(BATON ROUGE) LA – At 83, Baton Rouge resident Eleanor Belcherhas made it her life’s mission to help others. Giving comes easily to Belcher, but she’s now learning what it’s like to be a recipient of good fortune.Belcher is getting a new roof for her home, thanks to Prairieville/Baton Rouge-basedGarcia Roofing & Sheet Metal. For the last threeyears, Garcia Roofing & Sheet Metal has sponsored a contest to give away aroof to help a local needy family. Belcher was recently selected as the luckywinner.
“After reviewingall of the entries, we chose Eleanor Belcher as the candidate we most wanted toassist,” says Gabriel Garcia, owner of the roofing contracting company.
Living off of asmall social security check that barely covers mortgage, phone, electricity anda few essentials, Belcher was the perfect candidate. Her leaky roof was badlyin need of repair and had not been replaced since 1980, in spite of numeroushurricanes that had blown through the area.
But there wereother reasons why Belcher was a deserving candidate, according to Mr. Garcia. “EleanorBelcher has spent her life serving others, so now we have the opportunity togive something to someone who has been so generous with her time and herheart,” he says.
According to thenomination submitted by Belcher’s granddaughter, Rebecca Harrison, Belcher has spent18 years of her life ministering to inmates and has helped more than 100 prisoners. She also bakes cakes each week and brings them to the Salvation Army formeetings of recently released prisoners.
“It is our honor to give to someone whohas shared so much of herself with others and without expecting anything inreturn. It feels wonderful for us to be the ones to make her life easier for achange,” says Garcia.
